AJ’s History

AJ Auto Electrical began as a partnership between Alf McPhee and John Lyons in a small back section unit in Bond Street back in 2003. Within a year they had outgrown this small unit, purchased Knowles and Son, and moved across the road into the larger workshop.

In the early days AJ Auto Electrical was a small team of Alf, John, John’s wife Maree in administration and two other auto electricians.

Over the years their business grew, and so did AJ’s team. By 2009 their staff numbers had doubled and they had moved to the purpose-built premises in Victoria Ave where they are today.

John and Alf put a lot of thought into the new workshop and with expert advice and input from Cunningham Construction and McCulloch Architects, the design was finalised within the required budget - just! AJ’s was officially opened by his Worship the Mayor Tim Shadbolt on May 22, 2009 at a well-attended evening.

By the end of 2017, change was in the air again, with John Lyons wanting to begin the process of stepping back from the business to make time for his family and other projects. The business underwent a restructure, and the new Directors are Alf McPhee, Kirk Lyons (John’s son), Bryan Kennedy, and Glenn Howden. John has stayed on with the business as a manager, and the whole team are excited about the future of AJ Auto Electrical continuing to serve the Southland community for many years ahead.
