About Us

Company History

The management and staff of AJ Auto Electrical are proud to announce they are up and running and ready to answer all your auto electrical queries at their new premises, 4 Victoria Avenue, Invercargill.

The company’s brand new, purpose built workshops are a far cry from its initial, somewhat more humble set up in a back section unit in Bond Street back in 2003.

When AJ’s started out, however, it only needed to house business owners Alf McPhee and John Lyons, John’s wife Maree in administration, and two other auto electricians. Double that number today, and reasons for the latest move become clear. AJ’s simple, Bond Street surroundings were soon outgrown and just 12 months later in 2004 the pair bought Knowles and Sons and moved across the road to a larger workshop.

However, parking and access rapidly became a problem for the steadily growing business and John and Alf soon entered into discussions with Russell Cunningham, leading to the purchase of land and eventual construction of today’s brand new building. Combining their almost 70 years of experience, John and Alf put a lot of thought into the purpose built workshop and with the expert advice and input from Cunningham Construction and McCulloch Architects, the design was finalised within the required budget - just! AJ’s was officially opened by his Worship the Mayor Tim Shadbolt on May 22 at a well-attended evening. John and Alf wish to thank the many contractors that worked on the sitefor completing the job on deadline to such a high standard.

Over the years, John and Alf have also formed many lasting relationships with business people and individuals around Southland. They greatly appreciate and would like to express their thanks for the continued support, and look forward to this association carrying on into the future.

AJ's Today

There’s a lot to be said for the modern technology underpinning today’s motor vehicles. Not only have innovations such as ABS braking, electronic stability control and airbags made the driving experience immeasurably safer, but technology has also led to positive advances in areas such as fuel efficiency and emission control.

However, the explosion of automotive technology can occasionally come at a price. Where once your average Joe could claim to have sufficient engineering know-how to fix most vehicle problems, today electronics frequently make that an impossibility.

That’s why you need the help of the experts on hand when it comes to all matters auto electrical. AJ Auto Electrical have decades of collective experience in dealing with the more complex side of your vehicle’s insides, and with purpose built new premises and a team of 10 friendly staff, can deal with any auto electrical problem, large or small.

After listening to customer feedback, AJ’s have specifically designed their new workshops to make life easier for everybody. Not only is there ample off-street parking for customer vehicles, but the workshops themselves are now configured in “drive-through” style, meaning that commercial vehicles such as trucks and trailers can now drive in, and drive on out with a minimum of fuss. And from fuses to batteries to electrical faults of all kinds, AJ’s have it under control.

On the battery side, AJ’s are proud suppliers of Hella Endurant Batteries, which they believe are a quality product in an extremely competitive market. This product is backed up by the New Zealand-wide Battery Town network and excellent technical support. The cheapest battery is not always the best, with accurate starting and charging system diagnosis being very important.

There is also a large display of auto electrical parts at AJ’s, from terminals and fuses to tail and driving lights, work lights and trailer plugs. Huge developments continue to be made in the lighting field, with the improvement of LED lighting and powerful gas-discharge lighting.

Come on in and discuss your requirements and, if it’s not in AJ’s huge new store, there’s very little that’s not available overnight. So whether it’s that annoying breakdown, flat battery or a blown fuse, you can be assured of friendly, professional service at AJ’s, every time.

John, Alf and the team look forward to assisting you with your auto electrical requirements.

AJ’s People

They say a company is only as good as its people, so here’s a run-down on the friendly, professional AJ Auto Electrical team!

AJ Auto Electrical is owned by business partners John Lyons and Alf McPhee.

John has had a long association with Oreti Park Speedway and AJ’s continues as a sponsor. He is a past president and can often be seen on the starting grid as start controller. Both John and Alf have had many years involvement with the Waikiwi Rugby Club and AJ’s is a current major sponsor. John is an ex-player and was schoolboy convener for 5 years. Alf has twice been president, is a life member, and is a current committee member and team manager. AJ’s also sponsors or assists several other motor sporting and other entities, and is pleased to continue to support local endeavours in this way. Apart from family, John’s other interests include restoring several classic vehicles over the years, and he currently owns a 1969 Mustang, and a couple of classic speedway motor bikes. Alf’s other interests include jetboating in his 151 Hamilton 351 V8 and trying to improve his golf. They both enjoy motor racing and try to get to the odd V8 Supercar event. Alf’s wife Glenda is the AA’s driving instructor, so between family, sporting and other interests both house holds have very few dull moments.

Bryan Kennedy was one of the original electricians starting out with the firm in 2003 and is still there six years on. Bryan has a wealth of experience in the industry and is always busy all over Southland.

In 2005 Joe Hughes joined the team as parts manager, coming from 20 years in the auto trade.  Joe is one of the first people you will meet at AJ’s front counter.

Last year Tracy Reynolds signed on as workshop manager and fields incoming workshop calls, meets and greets, and assists in administration and parts.Tracy has a history in transport and industry administration and has fitted into the team easily.

The workshop staff is completed with Kirk Lyons, Kiel McPhee and Hayden Branks who have all completed their auto electrical qualifications in the last twelve months, and James Greenfield, who is a third-year apprentice.
